In both books they were not allowed to feel love.
Somehow, I think this comic has missed the point that both were right. Both feared for the cultural fate of western society; both describe two different sides of the same coin. I cannot stand it when people take it upon themselves to diminish 1984. Simply because we haven’t reached as extreme a political situation as depicted in 1984 we shouldn’t dismiss it. Surely we aren’t so stupid as to dismiss one extreme simply because the other seems closer.
Surely…
While half-assed readers argue over the worth of 1984 in comparison to A Brave New World, firms wage copyright based wars on working-class individuals. Patent feuds are raging over vegetables which could lead to the conviction of subsistence farmers. Food companies vary between E-numbers and the full name of the additives to dissuade increasing concern over the effects of the Es. Specialists present increasing concerns over “smart” phone data mining.
Surely we can see that we are flooded with as much information as is being withheld from us.
Surely, if somebody bothered to read both books, they would see that both authors are presenting two sides of the same concern. The fear is that we will become unable to personally keep track of the information concerning us, be it because of 1984 censorship, or A Brave New World information flooding.
Truly is it a human talent to stray from the main issue and bog down into the finer, tunnel-envisoned, non-existent issue. We should not be concerned with which author was “right-er”, but with how it is that we intend to restore control over our local information.
Surely…?
